WELLNESS SERVICES

We offer wellness services including reproduction to assist with the breeding and foaling season. Wellness services also include parasite control, pre-purchase exams, annual vaccinations, dental care, senior horse care, pain management, nutrition, and pharmaceuticals for your horses.

Horse Reproduction

In our efforts to provide comprehensive veterinary medical care for our equine patients, we are pleased to offer reproduction counseling services.

Sometimes breeding and foaling happen without a hitch, but there are times when Mother Nature has other ideas and things do not go as planned. Our dedicated staff of trained professionals can help through our extensive reproduction services which include artificial insemination, reproductive screening, and fertility evaluations.

We also offer diagnostic ultrasonographic evaluation and other techniques for assessing the fertility of stallions and mares as well as the health of mares and fetuses during pregnancy.

Please contact us to plan for your mare’s foaling so that we can provide rapid assistance during the foaling and the early neonatal period.

Many problems can occur during and after foaling, so this period is a critical time for veterinary intervention for your mare and newborn foal.

If you are considering breeding your horse or have questions or concerns about the best way to achieve success, please call us.

Parasite Control

As part of our veterinary practice’s commitment to provide comprehensive medical care for horses, we gladly offer a full-service parasite prevention and control program.

Parasites can be a significant problem in horses. Some horses can have a parasite infection, but show no outward evidence, whereas other horses can develop clinical signs ranging from mild illness to severe, life-threatening disease, such as colic (abdominal pain) and colitis (diarrhea).

All horses are at risk for exposure to parasites through daily activities such as grazing in a pasture and living in confined stable/barn conditions with other horses.

Even horses that appear normal and healthy can be infected and shed parasite eggs by the millions in their manure, contaminating the environment and infecting other horses.

Parasites are developing increased resistance to certain dewormers. However, we stay current with the deworming products that are effective and available to you.

We know the parasites in your geographic region and your horse’s environment and can design a parasite control regimen that will provide optimal protection for your horse.

As part of our full-service parasite control program, we can test a manure sample for evidence of parasites. Based on the results, we can prescribe an appropriate dewormer for treatment. Even if the test result is negative, we can structure an individualized deworming program to prevent parasites in your horse, based on many factors, including lifestyle and travel habits.

Regular veterinary examinations and parasite testing are important ways to protect your horse’s health. Our knowledgeable staff can provide you with a comprehensive parasite control program. We can recommend a schedule for parasite testing, discuss what signs of parasites you should look for in your horse, review ways to control parasites in and around your horse’s environment (e.g., regular manure removal from the pasture), discuss safe and effective treatment options if your horse has parasites, and recommend ways to control and prevent parasites in the future.

Parasites are not just a nuisance. They can cause serious illness that affects your horse’s overall health, body condition, and longevity. We can help you protect your horse. Call today to find out how!

Pharmaceuticals

When considering options for purchasing medication, horse owners have many choices, including online pharmacies and mail-order catalogs.

Who can offer you the most reliable and personalized service? Who has the most complete medical information on your horse and the ability to anticipate drug interactions or other problems that can result from inappropriately administering medication? Before you purchase your next prescription or medications refill, ask us about our fully stocked pharmacy.

You and your horse will benefit from our well-stocked pharmacy. We maintain a large inventory of veterinary pharmaceutical products and medications. You can rely on us whether your horse requires medication for a chronic medical condition or needs short-term medication while recovering from an illness, injury, or surgery.

When you purchase medications from our pharmacy, you can rest assured that your horse’s medications are obtained from safe, reliable sources and stored under optimal conditions. Our trained staff will fill your prescriptions with care as well as attention to detail and your horse’s specific needs. You can count on us to provide you with accurate information about your horse’s medications, including proper dosing information, and to alert you to any potential drug side effects or interactions.

We are also here if you experience any problems with your horse’s medication after you return home.

Call us for your next prescription or medication refill. We are pleased to provide our clients with a fully stocked pharmacy and we stand behind every product we dispense.

Pre-Purchase Exams

Are you planning to obtain a new horse? If so, please contact us to arrange a pre-purchase examination and we will examine your prospective horse before the purchase.

We will perform a physical and lameness examination and recommend additional diagnostic testing as needed such as radiography, ultrasonography and upper airway endoscopy.

We will evaluate the horse’s vaccination and deworming records and recommend any additional preventative care for your management methods.

While it is an exciting time to search for a new horse, buying a horse can be an expensive decision, so finding any problems before purchase will aid you in your important decision.

Please contact us today to schedule a pre-purchase examination!

Pain Management

The practice of high-quality veterinary medicine focuses on the entire patient.

Various problems can cause pain, which will affect your horse’s physical functioning and can have a detrimental affect on your horse’s well-being and state of mind. That’s why pain management is among our primary considerations when we’re treating a horse for any medical reason.

Our approach to pain management involves anticipating potentially painful procedures and taking steps to manage pain from the outset as well as continuing to manage pain throughout your horse’s treatment and recovery.

Did you know that various types of pain can look different in horses? For example, a horse with a sudden joint or bone injury may show very obvious outward signs of pain, such as reluctance to walk or bear weight on a leg, but a horse with chronic arthritis may exhibit very subtle signs of pain that can go unnoticed unless you know what to look for.

We will recognize signs of discomfort in horses and develop an individualized plan for managing pain in our patients.

From routine procedures to more advanced procedures and medical treatments, to chronically painful conditions (such as arthritis or back pain), we are dedicated to providing safe and effective pain management to every patient.

We will also help you recognize signs of pain in your horse so we can modify his or her pain management plan when necessary.

Recognizing and alleviating pain in our patients is at the very heart of quality, compassionate patient care. We don’t take pain management for granted and will employ all of our skills to help ensure your horse’s comfort, well-being, and full recovery.

Senior Care

Just as our health care needs change as we age, your horse’s health care needs also change. Nutritional needs, exercise habits, and many aspects of your horse’s daily routine and behavior can change with age.

But how can you tell the difference between “normal” aging and a medical problem? Some health issues that affect older horses can begin with very subtle changes that may go unnoticed until the problem has become serious, so it’s important to plan ahead and know what to look for as your horse becomes older.

Regular wellness examinations are important for every stage of your horse’s life, so don’t forget to schedule your senior horse’s wellness appointments.

The best way to help protect your horse as he or she ages is to understand the aging process. We understand that process and can help you help your horse.

Even if your senior horse is already being treated for a medical condition, treatment recommendations may change as your horse ages. Sometimes medication dosages need to be adjusted, or medication may need to be changed.

Routine physical examinations, including dental examination and other routine diagnostic testing (e.g., blood tests), are important for senior horses because these tests allow us to evaluate how your horse’s health is responding to current management strategies and changing with age.

Some problems, such as teeth malocclusion or Cushing disease (pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction), are fairly common in geriatric horses (aged 20 years or older). Treating these problems can help keep your horse comfortable and in good condition.

Your senior horse’s wellness examination also offers us an opportunity to examine your horse and address any of your questions or concerns about your horse. We welcome your questions and encourage you to be involved in decisions regarding your horse’s health care.

Older horses make wonderful companions and thanks to advances in veterinary medicine, horses are living longer than ever! You are an important ally in your senior horse’s health care, and we are here to help ensure that your horse is safe and happy throughout the “golden years.”

Dental Care

The laws governing equine veterinary care and dentistry are complex and vary by state. It is in your best interest (and your horse’s) to know who can legally provide equine dental care in your area.

The use of non-veterinarian “equine dentists” is common but may involve medical and legal risks, and only a licensed veterinarian should administer a sedative or analgesic to your horse, diagnose dental problems, and develop and oversee a treatment plan.

In our effort to provide the highest quality care to our equine patients, our veterinary practice is pleased to offer full-service dental care for horses.

Dental health is an important part of your horse’s overall health. Malocclusion, mouth pain, and other problems can contribute to head shaking, bit resistance, and other problem behaviors.

Your horse may not be exhibiting any of these behaviors and may seem normal, but do you really know if he or she has a healthy mouth? It is important for us to examine your horse’s teeth periodically to determine if there are any dental issues.

Dental health shouldn’t be taken for granted. We want your horse to live a long, healthy life, and we understand that maintaining a healthy mouth is important to maintain your horse’s weight and body condition.

We are happy to provide dental service with our state of the art Power Float and equipment. Your horse’s health is important to us, so call today to discuss your horse’s dental care needs.

Vaccinations

Horses today can live longer, healthier lives than ever before–in part because of vaccines that help protect them from deadly infectious diseases.

Over the years, vaccines against dangerous diseases have saved millions of horses. Unfortunately, many infectious diseases still pose a significant threat to horses that are unvaccinated.

Although vaccine programs have been highly successful and vaccines are considered routine today, we (as caregivers) and you (as a horse owner) cannot afford to become complacent about keeping your horse updated on his or her vaccinations.

Many vaccines are available for use in horses, but your horse may not need every available vaccine. Some are considered core vaccines and should be administered to all horses, whereas other vaccines are optional (non-core) and may be recommended for a particular horse based on a variety of factors, such as how the horse is used (e.g.,show horse, brood mare, trail horse), frequency of travel, stable management, age, and other variables that affect the risk of exposure to disease.

Vaccine recommendations can also change throughout a horse’s life, as frequency of travel and other variables change.

We will consider all these factors when we recommend which vaccines your horse should receive. Vaccination is a safe, effective, and relatively inexpensive way to help horses live longer, healthier lives.

Protecting your horse is our primary goal, so developing an appropriate vaccine schedule is important to us. Call us today to set up an appointment to discuss your horse’s vaccination needs.

Nutrition

From the very first day you purchase a new horse through the final days of his or her life, nutrition plays a critical role in your horse’s overall health and well-being.

Some horse owners take nutrition for granted, but did you know that your horse’s nutritional needs change with age and activity level? Do you know how many calories your horse should have each day and whether you are over- or underfeeding? Are you feeding the right type of hay? Are you feeding the right balance of hay and feed?

Whether your horse is an elite athlete or a pasture pet, has special dietary needs, or simply needs to shed (or gain) a few pounds, our nutritional counseling services can help you accomplish your goals and keep your horse in good body condition.

We offer counseling in dietary selection and feeding practices for horses during various life stages and activities, such as growth, pregnancy, nursing, and the “golden years.”

If your horse has a medical condition, we can help you select the most appropriate feeding regimen to maintain his or her body condition.

It can be easy for a horse owner to become overwhelmed by the diversity of available advice on how to best feed a horse. We can offer expert advice to help you negotiate the complicated array of choices. Our nutritional counseling service will help you achieve and maintain optimal nutrition for your horse.

Ambulatory

Our equine ambulatory service permits us to bring our highly qualified staff and medical expertise right to your farm.

We offer preventative care such as annual examinations and vaccinations for your horse as well as emergency treatment if your horse suddenly becomes sick.

Horses that are fearful or easily stressed also benefit from being examined in their own environment, where they are likely to feel more secure and calm. This permits us to better evaluate them in a more relaxed and natural setting.

There are many reasons to consider taking advantage of our ambulatory services, so please contact us today if you would like us to make a farm call to assist you and your horse.
